The city of “Our Lady of La Paz” also called “Chukiago Marka” or “City of the Illimani” is embedded in the Bolivian highlands at 3640 meters above sea level amidst the Oriental or Royal mountain ranges and the Occidental mountain ranges.

Many poets have been inspired by its natural emblem, the snow-capped Illimani, and between heart-felt verses one hears that which many times has been sung to it:

“You are the light of the Andes oh city of La Paz, with your white poncho
The dormant Illimani dreams of its happy stone history
I don’t want to die without seeing you once again my Chukiagu Marka...”
(From the song “Chukiagu Marka” from the “Kjarkas of Bolivia”)

These songs are moving and melt the heart of Bolivian residents or those living in La Paz, a city in which tradition, customs and modernism co-exist.

Current “Government Capital” of Bolivia, it is a city that has a profound inter-cultural identity, a mixture of native Andean traditions and customs that came from Spain in the time of the Colony.

The La Paz District, with a population of approximately 2,812,000 inhabitants who are spread out in various geographical regions (highlands, valleys, plains and warm valleys), was the birth place of the Tiahuanacota Civilization which lasted 27 centuries between 1500 B.C. and 1200 A.D.

The Sacred Inca Lake or Titicaca Lake, with shared sovereignty between the republics of Bolivia and Peru, is the highest navigable lake in the world and is located at an altitude of 3800 m. above sea level. In the Copacabana peninsula one encounters the “Copacabana Virgin” Sanctuary, which is an important center of catholic pilgrimage for Bolivians as well as foreigners. About an hour and a half away from this lake-side bank location we encounter the Island of the Sun which in the times of the Incas was a sanctuary for virgins who were dedicated to the sun god.

The closeness of the city of La Paz to the Yungas or Inter-Andean Valleys provides an excellent opportunity to visit the paradise-like and exuberant scenery that are for ever impressed in the tourists’ retina; the road that unites La Paz with Coroico, which is constructed at the border of a steep precipice with a width of only three meters is called the “Death Route”. Those who practice mountain bike-riding take this adventure route so they can have the unforgettable memory of becoming a “Survivor of the Death Route”.

To the north of the District lies the Amazonian area with its tropical climate, there one finds the Natural Madidi Park Reserve that is appropriate for ecological and adventure tourism.

The proximity of the “City of the Illimani” to the Royal and Occidental mountain ranges allows accessibility to the snow-covered Chacaltaya (5421 m) for activities such as skiing, and to the snow-covered Huayna Potosi for mountain climbing. This latter mountain of 6088 meters of altitude is the most accessible for this type of extreme sport.

The rich and diverse Bolivian folklore is expressed by innumerable authentic manifestations throughout the country, in the cities as well as in provinces.
